The typical Soums in Selenge River Basin .. The Selenge River Basin (SRB), located in northern Mongolia, is theupper reaches of Lake Baikal. The steppe and forest are the dominantlandscapes, accounting for 66% and 29% of the total area of the basin,respectively (Wang et al., 2022). The climate varies from mild andsemi-arid in the middle and upper reaches to arid and cold in the lowerreaches. The SRB is a key pastural region in Mongolia, producing over60% of the country's livestock products. However, desertification,exacerbated by temperature fluctuations, overgrazing, and populationincrease, has become a significant threat to ecological security andsustainable development (Xu et al., 2023). The dynamics process andfuture scenarios of the pastural system in typical Soums of SRB wereanalyzed. Four Soums, including Tumurbulag in Khuvsgul, Khutag-Undur inBulgan, Zuunburen in Selenge, and Orkhon in Darkhan-Uul, were selectedfrom the basin.
